Life on board ship can be very cosmopolitan, with many different nationalities of seafarer working together. Taking into consideration all the advantages and disadvantages, this career is not for everyone. Seafarers face a hard life, living in harsh conditions and spending months and months away from their families. They spend much of their lives at sea. Conditions on a ship can be cramped, noisy and dangerous and yet they go, because of exceptional earning potential and the opportunity to see the world.

Merchant navy can be described as commercial fleet of non-combatant ships which deals with transportation of passengers, cargo and lot of other things by sea that may not be possible to dispatch either by road, rail and air, between various countries. Lot of people confuse merchant navy with national navy but Merchant navy isn’t the same as Indian navy. Merchant navy fleet may include Passenger ships, Tanker ships, Cargo ships, Bulk carrier ships, Container ships, Barge carrying ships including roll on/ roll off ships. With growing economic and fastest developing country India has a largest merchant shipping fleet and has a variety of jobs in Indian as well as Foreign vessels. Merchant Navy is the backbone of international trade. As an island nation, we depend on the sea for 95% of our trade and security. More than 90% of the international world trade is via these ships. Without the merchant navy, much of the import-export business would come to a grinding halt.
